🌊 “How the World Works” – Exploring Summer Under the Sea ☀️🐠
As part of our ongoing IB PYP Unit of Inquiry, “How the World Works,” the children are learning about the natural patterns and changes in our world, with a focus on the four seasons. After discovering the signs of Spring, we moved forward in time to explore what happens in Summer.
We began by looking at a seasonal timeline, reflecting on how the weather, environment, and our activities change with each season. The children shared their own experiences of summer—sunshine, beach trips, and swimming—and this led us into our next creative activity: imagining a summer adventure under the sea!
Each child created a unique underwater collage of themselves snorkeling, surrounded by sea life. They used drawing, painting, and collage materials to build vibrant underwater scenes filled with fish, seaweed, coral, turtles, and jellyfish. As they worked, we had thoughtful conversations about what creatures live in the ocean, what it’s like to snorkel, and how this watery world is different from the land.
This activity supported our understanding of how the world works by helping children see how seasonal changes affect our environment and daily life, and how summer offers a whole new world to explore—especially in the ocean!
Through storytelling, observation, and imagination, children are beginning to see the connections between the natural world and their own lives, one season at a time.
