🌿 Exploring the Rainforest: A Kindergarten Art Adventure
This month in kindergarten, we took a deep dive into the lush, colorful world of the rainforest—and we brought it to life right in our classroom with a collaborative mural project that combined art, science, and storytelling.

We began our journey with a question:
“What animals live in the rainforest?”
Armed with books from our classroom library, the children researched their favorite rainforest animals. From bright blue poison dart frogs to sleepy sloths and curious toucans, each child chose one animal that captured their imagination. Using crayons, markers, and colored pencils, they drew their chosen animal on a giant sheet of kraft paper, which became the base of our vibrant rainforest mural. The mural quickly blossomed with trees, vines, and a parade of rainforest creatures.
To build on our learning, we watched an engaging video that introduced the four layers of the rainforest:
- Emergent Layer
- Canopy
- Understory
- Forest Floor
The children were fascinated to discover that each layer is home to different animals and plants, each with their own special adaptations. We broke into four small groups, each assigned one rainforest layer. Using books, illustrations, and discussions, the children became mini-experts on their assigned layer.

Next came the crafting fun! Each group created an animal from their layer using paper plates, paint, construction paper, and a whole lot of imagination. From colorful macaws soaring high in the emergent layer to leaf-cutter ants scurrying on the forest floor, the creativity on display was incredible.
Finally, we gathered for a Rainforest Show and Tell. Each group proudly presented their paper plate animal and shared what they learned about their rainforest layer. It was inspiring to see them speaking confidently, using new vocabulary words, and listening with curiosity to their classmates’ discoveries.
This mural now brightens our hallway, not only as a beautiful work of art but as a testament to the power of hands-on learning and creative expression. Through drawing, researching, crafting, and sharing, our young artists gained a deeper understanding of one of the world’s most important ecosystems—and had a blast doing it!
